The rank next to each word is its position in a count of Arabic film and TV subtitles: tens of millions of lines of dialogue, which is as close to everyday speech as a written corpus gets. A word ranked #40 shows up in almost every conversation. A word ranked #1,900 you will still meet within a week of reading.
Each subtitle word was matched to a dictionary headword through its inflection table, so كَتَبَ collects its past, present and command forms into one entry. Where one spelling can be two words, the count goes to the reading a learner is far more likely to meet. Treat the numbers as a good ordering rather than a precise measure.
A few words sit past the top 2,000 or carry no rank at all. Those are the site’s own additions: days of the week, the words a beginner course cannot do without, and a handful of everyday terms subtitles rarely need.
